Featured Works

Below are images and brief descriptions of some of the finished works that featured in my last exhibition.
I will post up more over the coming weeks before I begin a new body of work.

Over Sheds, near Fanore - oil on canvas - 14"x10" - sold
Private Collection, New York City.

Created in the open air in the neighboring coastal village of Fanore, I was drawn into this scene by strong shapes and a chance to design a composition around them.
The bird perched on the wire stayed just long enough for me to capture his gesture with a gentle stroke of my brush.

Hidden, Sheds in Ruin - oil on linen canvas - 20"x18" - sold
Private Collection, New York City.

Found this place hidden away in decay, down back roads, along green paths. Forgotten, but now remembered.

Niland's Ruin - oil on linen canvas - 41"x31" - sold
Private Collection, New York City.

This piece is entitled 'Niland's Ruin', and was created in the open air near my studio in Ballyvaughan. It is actually the closest house to me on the road towards the village of Ballyvaughan. I am friends with a lady called Martina who grew up in this house. can't wait to show her an image of the painting when I get home.

A New York Diary - Brooklyn

Brooklyn is the place we have been staying since arriving in New York this year.
This borough, which I was surprised to find is the most populated borough in New York City, has a motto
which translated from Dutch reads 'Unity makes Strength'.

Last year we spent two months in an area called Bushwick. This year we are living in a neighboring area called Bedford-Stuyvesant colloquially known as Bed-Stuy. Our street is full of beautiful old terraced houses referred to as 'Brown Stones'.

I absolutely love Brooklyn! yesterday I was just saying to Boo that I'm so happy we have got to experience these Brooklyn neighborhoods while at the same time being able to hop into Manhattan each day.

A couple of days ago we met Monica Lisa - Mills, a visual artist, sean-nos singer and teacher, at her studio in Red Hook. Believe it or not, I met Monica this year in Thailand and invited her and her pal Katrina to a party at the place I was staying. In conversation I found out that Monica had first visited the Burren and Ballyvaughan to work on her Art in 2006 and had returned many times. We both could not believe the connection we had made, and kept in touch.

Monica showed us around Red Hook, one of the most visually interesting urban places I have ever been in NYC. It used to be referred to as new Amsterdam, and we had caught a taxi boat over from Manhattan.
Nowadays it is home to many artists studios, boutique shops, pubs, and home brew off-licences.

Hope you enjoy these photos and that they give you a flavor of my time in Brooklyn this year.

But, in my opinion there is nobody that can sum up the 'vibe' of Brooklyn like Mos Def.
So he gets the last Word! (click on the link below)

A New York Diary - Interview in Chelsea

The day before yesterday myself and Boo were invited to join journalist and 'Radio Irish' host Sean Mc Carthy, in the heart of the art district in Chelsea NY. Above is a video interview and document of our time spent walking along the recently renovated 'Highline', an old abandoned elevated railway line, which snakes through the center of New Yorks art district.

Here is a link to the interview on You Tube if you are having trouble viewing it above.
New York Art Exhibition by Artist Richard Hearns.

It was a wonderful setting to meet up, as Chelsea is home to the highest concentration of galleries in the entire city. Afterwards we had the chance to visit those numerous galleries located all over 10th and 11th avenues, between 23rd and 25th Streets.

A New York Diary - Manhattan

It can be difficult to explain the atmosphere of New York City. It is not easy to explain the feelings I get.

Alive with the beat of the people and the pulse of a hundred different races all co-existing together under one umbrella, it's a wonderful place. Full of contrasts, full of happenings, fully alive and fully engaged with itself!
Words can not describe it, so I'd hope my paintings, sketches and photos will!

Of course there is the New York everyone recognizes. The branded, brash and bold flashing lights of Time Square and Broadway. Myself and Boo walked there the day before yesterday. Each time I'm there I notice I kind of 'turn off', over sensitized by all the input and superficial nature of that space.

Yesterday we spent the whole afternoon hanging out in Union Square, people watching around 14th Street. Being entertained by countless characters, dancers, singers and fashion victims! It truly is one of the most amazing cities on earth! I Love this City!
