Delft Blue Bowl with Red Apple and Grapes

Delft Blue Bowl with Red Apple and Grapes - oil on canvas - 12"x12" - sold

Over the last few months I have begun to develop a more 'classical' approach to my still life painting.
That is, instead of one lone object being described, my chosen subjects have evolved into a more elaborate set up.
This progression is very exciting for me as I get to play around with large background shapes on a larger canvas and work in a rapid manner making the composition pleasing to myself.
After that I begin to concentrate on describing the essence of each of the varied objects - how light falls on them bringing different results.
That is essentially what I am painting - how light falls on an object whether it be the drapery, ceramic or organic and how I can describe that in paint.
With this piece I had great fun playing with the various tones and values within the shadow areas of the cloth.

Velasquez, Sorolla and Vermeer - I can't help thinking of them as I paint in this fashion.

Hope you like this piece.
